Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park

Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park, Florida, United States

Park

Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park in Volusia County near Ormond Beach, Florida, USA, preserves the ruins of a small coquina rock blockhouse from an 18th-century plantation called Carrickfergus, originally built by John Moultrie as an outside kitchen for his overseer.

Later owned by John Addison and Duncan McRae, the site produced cotton and sugar cane from 1816 to 1836 until the plantation was burned during the Second Seminole War, when volunteers fortified the structure for defense against attacks.

The roofless ruin, with its six-foot walls, round tower, fireplace, embattled top, embankment, and moat—partly added in the 1920s—sits amid flatwoods alongside a sugar mill foundation from 1832, but since July 2020 it has been closed to the public for cultural preservation, accessible only via special interpretive hikes from Tomoka State Park.
