Its centerpiece is the largest known glacial pothole in the United States, a 38-foot-deep, 42-foot-wide elliptical hole carved over 15,000 years ago during the Wisconsin Glacial Period by swirling meltwater and rock debris. Uncovered by coal miners in 1884 and opened as a state park in 1964, it offers a fenced viewing platform, interpretive signs, short woodland hiking trails, and adjacent athletic fields in a peaceful setting blending geology, history, and nature.
