Nature Reserve
Asbury Woods is a 234-acre nature reserve and education center located in Millcreek Township near Erie, Pennsylvania.
The land has a rich history that dates back hundreds of millions of years, once submerged under an ancient ocean, and it carries archaeological evidence of indigenous peoples who lived there thousands of years ago. By the 1800s, European settlers used the land for farming, bog iron mining, and other industries.
In 1920, Dr. Otto Behrend purchased a portion known as Asbury Farm, where he reforested parts of the land and maintained a working farm. Upon his death, he bequeathed the property to the local school district to be used for educational and recreational purposes. Since then, Asbury Woods has grown into a well-maintained reserve with over five miles of trails that wind through forests, meadows, and wetlands.
Its Nature Center, originally built as a cottage in 1931 and expanded in 2005, offers interactive exhibits, classrooms, live animal displays, and serves as a hub for community programming focused on environmental education.
A partnership between nonprofit groups, educational institutions, and the local government ensures ongoing conservation and public access, making Asbury Woods a cherished place for nature exploration, wildlife observation, and outdoor learning.
