Avery Island in Louisiana is a geological and historical treasure, best known as the birthplace of Tabasco sauce.
It is a large salt dome covering approximately 2,200 acres, formed over thousands of years from an ancient seabed pushed to the surface by geological forces. The island has been owned for over 180 years by the interrelated Marsh, Avery, and McIlhenny families, who have developed it into a site of cultural and natural significance.
Native Americans originally discovered and used the salt springs here over 12,000 years ago, extracting salt from the briny springs by boiling, which was traded across the region. European settlers and later, well-known American families, used the island for salt mining and agriculture, including sugarcane plantations.
Today, it is home to the McIlhenny Company, which produces Tabasco sauce on the site, and also features lush subtropical flora, bird sanctuaries, and the renowned Jungle Gardens. The island is surrounded by wetlands and bayous, making it a unique ecological and historical site that reflects the deep connection between natural resources and regional culture.
