State Park
Backbone State Park in Iowa, dedicated in 1920 as the state's first state park, is known for its unique geography centered around a steep, narrow ridge of bedrock called the Devil’s Backbone, carved by the Maquoketa River.
Covering 2,001 acres of mainly hardwood forest, the park offers diverse outdoor activities including hiking on a rugged 21-mile trail system, rock climbing on limestone bluffs, fishing in well-stocked trout streams like Fenchel Creek, and swimming or boating in Backbone Lake created by a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) dam.
The CCC also constructed much of the park’s infrastructure during the 1930s, including rustic cabins, picnic shelters, an auditorium, and bridges, many of which remain in use today. Visitors can explore the CCC museum to learn about the park’s history and the CCC's work, while enjoying nature, birdwatching, and seasonal winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
The park offers a mix of adventure and relaxation with facilities for camping and fishing, making it a go-to destination for nature enthusiasts in northeast Iowa.
