Historical Landmark
Beauvoir in Biloxi, Mississippi, is the historic last home of Jefferson Davis, the only President of the Confederate States during the American Civil War.
Built around 1852 as a vacation estate for a wealthy planter, it became Davis’s retirement home from 1877 until his death in 1889, where he wrote his memoirs. The estate features a distinctive raised cottage design with high ceilings, wraparound porches, and cypress and heart pine construction elevated on tall brick piers to protect against flooding.
After Davis’s family sold the property in the early 20th century, it was operated as a Confederate veterans’ home until 1957 and has since been preserved as a National Historic Landmark. The site includes the mansion, a presidential library, museum exhibits, beautifully landscaped grounds, and a Confederate Memorial Cemetery.
Though severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Beauvoir was restored and continues to serve as a powerful symbol of Southern heritage and history, offering guided tours and educational programs.
