Walter, an early Coca-Cola bottler in the Southeast, and his wife Bessie began transforming a fishing camp they purchased in 1917 into a botanical paradise inspired by gardens they visited in the U.S. and Europe. The gardens feature year-round blooms, including over 250,000 azaleas, camellias, roses, and a variety of seasonal flowers, along with specialized areas like a rose garden, Asian-American Garden with a tea house, and scenic water features.
The English Renaissance-style home, built in 1935, contains original furnishings and reflects regional architectural heritage. The gardens opened to the public in 1932 and the home later became a museum. The estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains a beloved cultural and horticultural landmark, drawing visitors who admire its beauty and historical significance.
