Bridge
The Biloxi Bay Bridge in Mississippi carries U.S. Route 90 over Biloxi Bay, connecting Biloxi and Ocean Springs.
Originally built in 1962 as a four-lane structure with a drawbridge, it was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It was rebuilt and reopened to traffic in November 2007 with a widened design featuring six lanes—three lanes in each direction—and a 12-foot-wide pedestrian and bicycle path on the Gulf-facing side. The new 1.6-mile-long bridge was constructed to withstand hurricane-force winds and waves, with a vertical clearance of about 95 feet to accommodate marine traffic below.
The bridge incorporates precast bulb-tee girders and was completed in roughly 20 months at a cost of $339 million, handling about 35,000 vehicles daily. This critical infrastructure replaced an older bridge that had two side-by-side spans without shoulders and provided only about 21 feet of clearance over the water, making the modern bridge safer and more capable for today’s traffic demands.
