Tourist Attraction
Bishop Castle in Colorado is a remarkable, large stone castle built almost entirely by one man, Jim Bishop, over about 50 years starting in 1969.
Originally intended as a simple family cottage, it grew into a three-story medieval-style castle nestled in the Wet Mountains near Pueblo. The castle features gothic windows, winding staircases, steel walkways, stained glass, and a striking fire-breathing dragon crafted from salvaged materials.
Jim Bishop, who had no formal training in architecture or construction, constructed the castle by hand using stone from the surrounding land and wrought iron from his family’s ornamental iron business. The tallest tower reaches about 160 feet high, and the interior includes a grand ballroom resembling a gothic church.
The castle is open to visitors for free and stands as a testament to one man's creativity, determination, and craftsmanship, making it an awe-inspiring roadside attraction and architectural marvel in Colorado.
