Wildlife Refuge
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland, located about 12 miles south of Cambridge, is a critical sanctuary established in 1933 to protect migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway.
It covers over 28,000 acres of diverse habitats, including tidal marshes, freshwater wetlands, mixed hardwood and pine forests, and croplands, making it an ecologically significant area that contains one-third of Maryland’s tidal wetlands.
The refuge supports a rich variety of wildlife with over 250 bird species, 35 reptile and amphibian species, and numerous mammals, notably hosting the largest breeding population of bald eagles on the East Coast north of Florida and the largest natural population of formerly endangered Delmarva fox squirrels.
Visitors can explore the refuge year-round via hiking and paddling trails, a popular wildlife drive, and a visitor center with exhibits, observation decks, live eagle and osprey cams, and educational programs. It plays an important role in wildlife conservation, storm protection for Dorchester County, and public engagement with nature.
