Arboretum
Blithewold Manor, Gardens and Arboretum in Rhode Island is a historic 33-acre estate established in the 1890s by Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle as their summer retreat overlooking Narragansett Bay.
The property features a large English Country Manor style mansion rebuilt after a fire in 1906, alongside meticulously designed gardens and an extensive arboretum containing around 2,000 trees and shrubs representing 500 species from North America, Europe, and Asia.
Bessie Van Wickle, a passionate horticulturist, personally oversaw the garden layouts, which include formal and woodland areas, specimen trees, and flowering gardens that reflect both American and European garden traditions.
The arboretum was recognized early on for its rare species, such as the Chinese toon tree, and houses several Rhode Island state champion trees. The estate was preserved by Marjorie Van Wickle Lyon, who bequeathed it to a heritage trust to be opened as a public museum and garden in 1978.
Today, Blithewold offers visitors a beautifully maintained glimpse into Gilded Age garden design, showcasing the family's love of art, nature, and horticulture with a variety of garden rooms, historical architecture, and sweeping views of the bay.
