Nature Preserve
Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area covers 1,025 acres across Lower Paxton and Middle Paxton Townships in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, straddling Blue Mountain just north of Harrisburg off Pennsylvania Route 443 near Fishing Creek Valley Road.
Donated to the state in 1999 by real estate developer Alex Boyd, it protects mature trees of diverse species that shelter deep-forest birds like warblers, plus old fields blooming with wildflowers such as butterfly weed that draw butterflies and field birds in summer.
The preserve offers 10.5 miles of hiking trails from easy loops around a spring-fed pond to challenging ridgetop paths with scenic views, environmental education programs, birdwatching, and year-round day-use access from sunrise to sunset.
