Camp Helen State Park

Camp Helen State Park, Florida, United States

Park

Camp Helen State Park covers 180 acres west of Panama City Beach in Florida, USA, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Powell, the state's largest coastal dune lake formed by a rare brackish ecosystem where freshwater mixes with saltwater through a seasonal sand berm.

Evidence of human habitation dates back over 4,000 years with prehistoric middens and mounds, while from 1945 to 1987 it served as a company resort for Avondale Textile Mills employees, featuring restored 1930s log-and-stone Civilian Conservation Corps-style cottages and a lodge now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This day-use-only haven offers swimming, beachcombing, hiking trails through dunes and scrub oak forests, birdwatching for bald eagles, ospreys, piping plovers, and migratory species, plus freshwater and saltwater fishing amid salt marshes and sand pine scrub.
