Amusement Park
Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire, opened in 1902 as a trolley park created by the Hudson, Pelham & Salem Railways to boost weekend ridership, originally featuring botanical gardens, picnic areas, gentle rides, a penny arcade, and an electric fountain.
After the popularity of automobiles led to the decline of trolley travel, the park closed in 1929 but was revived in 1932 by a private owner who added new attractions including the iconic Yankee Cannonball wooden roller coaster, installed in 1936 and still a central attraction. The park flourished under the ownership of three families since 1958, expanding its rides and games while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere.
It historically hosted famous performers such as Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra in its Dancehall Theatre during the Big Band era. Today, Canobie Lake Park is one of New England’s most popular amusement parks, offering over 85 rides and attractions alongside Castaway Island, a water park, and remains independent and family-run.
