Fortress
The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, constructed by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695 to defend the city and protect Spain’s interests in the region.
Built from coquina, a unique shellstone material, its star-shaped design made it highly resistant to cannon fire and sieges. The fort never fell to enemy forces despite multiple attacks by the British in the early 18th century. Throughout its history, it served variously as a Spanish, British, and American military post, and later as a prison, notably incarcerating Native American leaders during conflicts known as the Seminole Wars.
The fort was renamed Fort Marion during American control but had its original name restored in 1942. Decommissioned in 1933, it became a National Monument in 1924 and is now managed by the National Park Service, serving as a prominent historical site that preserves the colonial and military history of St. Augustine and early America.
