Tourist Attraction
Charleston Tea Garden, located on Wadmalaw Island near Charleston, South Carolina, has a rich history rooted in American tea cultivation dating back to the late 1700s when French botanist André Michaux introduced Camellia sinensis plants to the region.
The modern Tea Garden began on a 127-acre farm initially purchased in 1963 by the Lipton Tea Company, which moved surviving tea plants from the Pinehurst Tea Plantation in Summerville to Wadmalaw Island as part of a research project to grow tea commercially in the U.S. Despite early challenges and Lipton concluding the endeavor was not viable, William Barclay Hall, a third-generation tea taster, purchased the farm in 1987 and established the Charleston Tea Garden, developing it into a unique American tea brand called American Classic Tea.
In 2003, ownership passed to the Bigelow Tea Company, which continues to operate and promote the garden, preserving its legacy as the only large-scale commercial tea plantation in North America. The garden offers visitors immersive experiences including trolley tours through the tea fields and factory tours showcasing tea production, making it a distinctive destination that blends agricultural heritage with the scenic beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
