Park
Chemin-A-Haut State Park spans 503 acres on a high bluff overlooking winding Bayou Bartholomew in northern Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, about 10 miles north of Bastrop, with its French name meaning "High Road" from Native American migration routes.
One of Louisiana's earliest state parks established in 1935, it features cabins, RV and tent camping, a group camp, picnic areas with shelters, a swimming pool, tennis courts, hiking trails, boat rentals for bayou exploration, shore fishing at Big Slough Lake for bream and bluegill, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing amid mixed pine-hardwood forests.
Highlights include paddling to the massive thousand-year-old "Castle Tree" cypress with its cave-like base and scenic banks of Bayou Bartholomew, which hosts over 115 fish species, drawing around 28,000 visitors yearly for its unspoiled natural beauty.
