Park
Cherry Creek State Park is a 4,200‑acre Colorado state park located southeast of Denver in Aurora, built around an 850‑ to 880‑acre reservoir that serves as its central feature.
The park lies on former prairie land where the Army Corps of Engineers created Cherry Creek Reservoir in the 1950s for flood control, and it later became one of the state’s first major recreation‑focused areas. Today it offers a mix of water and land activities, with boating, jet skiing, fishing, swimming, and water‑skiing on the reservoir alongside more than 35 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding through grasslands and wetlands.
It also includes a modern campground with around 130–135 campsites, picnic areas, a marina, boat ramps, an off‑leash dog park, and special facilities such as a model‑airplane field and a family shooting range, making it a busy year‑round outdoor hub for the Denver metro area. The park supports a rich variety of wildlife, with over 40 mammal and 170 bird species recorded in and around the reservoir and surrounding prairie.
