The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, often called the C&O Canal, was constructed between 1828 and 1850 to provide a transportation route along the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland, with the ambitious goal of reaching the Ohio River.
Intended to link Atlantic seaports to the Midwest, the canal faced immediate competition from the Erie Canal and later from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which ultimately overshadowed the canal's commercial viability. Stretching about 184.5 miles, the canal required engineering feats like 74 locks, 11 aqueducts, and the 3,118-foot Paw Paw Tunnel to navigate changes in elevation.
While initially crucial for transporting coal, lumber, and agricultural goods, the canal struggled financially and suffered devastating floods. It ceased operation in 1924, but its historical significance and natural beauty led to its preservation as the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in 1971.
Today, the canal's towpath serves as a popular trail for hiking, biking, and enjoying the scenic landscape, preserving the legacy of early American transportation and the communities that grew along its route.
