Cheyenne Mountain State Park is a Colorado state park of about 2,700 acres located just south of Colorado Springs, at the base of the prominent Cheyenne Mountain where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountain foothills.
The park was created in 2006 from what was formerly the JL Ranch, preserving one of the last large stretches of open space along the southern Front Range and offering a relatively undisturbed foothill ecosystem. It features roughly 28 miles of trails that wind through prairies, woodlands, and pine forests, allowing visitors to hike, bike, and enjoy scenic views of Cheyenne Mountain, Pikes Peak, and the surrounding plains.
Wildlife is abundant and diverse, with species such as deer, elk, black bears, mountain lions, coyotes, foxes, prairie dogs, and various raptors regularly seen in the park. The site also includes a campground with RV and tent sites, picnic areas, a visitor center with educational exhibits, and occasional guided hikes and nature programs, making it a popular year‑round destination for outdoor recreation and environmental learning.
