Monument
Chimney Rock National Monument in Colorado is an archaeological and cultural site located within the San Juan National Forest that preserves over 200 ancient homes and ceremonial buildings constructed by the Ancestral Puebloans more than a thousand years ago.
The site features a dramatic Great House Pueblo and Great Kiva, used for religious ceremonies and community gatherings, situated near two towering rock pinnacles called Chimney Rock and Companion Rock, which were integral to the Puebloans’ celestial observations and lunar calendar. Designated a national monument in 2012, it holds great spiritual significance for many modern Native American tribes.
The settlement, once home to about 2,000 Pueblo People, was abandoned around 1125 AD after which the buildings were ceremonially burned. Visitors can explore the preserved ruins and hike to vantage points offering expansive views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains, experiencing a remarkable connection to the ancient culture known for its advanced astronomy and community organization.
