Tourist Attraction
Crystal Cave in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, is the world’s largest geode discovered in 1897 accidentally by workers digging a well beneath Heineman’s Winery.
The cave features massive celestine (strontium sulfate) crystals up to three feet wide that cover the limestone walls, creating a stunning blue-hued underground spectacle. Originally smaller, the cave was expanded as many crystals were mined for use in fireworks, but mining stopped early to preserve it as a tourist attraction.
During Prohibition, tours of Crystal Cave helped save Heineman’s Winery by attracting visitors and selling unfermented grape juice. Today, visitors can tour the cave daily from May through September, exploring nearly 40 feet below ground while learning about the cave’s geological history and its role in the winery’s legacy.
