It was designed with a 3-foot gauge to allow tighter curves and navigate difficult mountain terrain, including the 10,015-foot-high Cumbres Pass and the dramatic Toltec Gorge. The railroad initially supported mining and logging industries, followed by freight and passenger service, but faced decline and potential abandonment by the late 1960s.
Saved by joint ownership from Colorado and New Mexico in 1970, it was preserved as a heritage railroad that operates vintage steam locomotives and historic rolling stock, providing scenic tourist rides through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the American West and showcasing engineering feats from the steam era.
It runs primarily during warmer months and remains a National Historic Landmark valued for its authenticity and cultural significance.
