State Park
DeSoto State Park in northeastern Alabama is a sprawling 3,502-acre park situated on Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne. It was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which built many of the park’s structures, roads, hiking trails, and picnic areas using native sandstone and timber.
The park is named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and features lush mountain terrain, rivers, waterfalls, and diverse plant and wildlife. It borders the Little River Canyon National Preserve and includes the 104-foot DeSoto Falls, Alabama’s tallest waterfall, accessible via a paved trail.
The park offers nearly 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, camping facilities with full hookups and primitive sites, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a lodge with cabins and chalets. Visitors can also explore a CCC museum honoring the workers who built the park. DeSoto State Park blends natural beauty with rich history, providing a variety of outdoor activities and scenic experiences for families, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.
