The Detroit Zoo, currently located in Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, Michigan, originally opened in 1883 in a different location on Michigan Avenue across from the future Tiger Stadium.
It was founded when a local businessman, Luther Beecher, bought animals from a bankrupt circus and established the Detroit Zoological Garden, though this early zoo closed the following year. The modern Detroit Zoo opened on August 1, 1928, covering 125 acres and housing over 2,000 animals of more than 200 species.
It was the first zoo in the U.S. to feature bar-less habitats, pioneering animal welfare and sustainability efforts still recognized today. The zoo is known for attractions like the Arctic Ring of Life, a large polar bear habitat with an underwater viewing tunnel, and the National Amphibian Conservation Center.
Despite challenges including a brief city closure in 2006, the Detroit Zoological Society took over operations and secured funding, keeping the zoo open and expanding educational programs and habitats into a leading zoological park widely celebrated for conservation and public engagement.
