Durango is a scenic city in southwestern Colorado, serving as the county seat and largest community in La Plata County. Founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company along the Animas River, it soon thrived as a hub for mining, transportation, and trade in the San Juan Mountains region.
The name Durango was inspired by the Mexican city of the same name and ultimately derives from the Basque word “Urango,” meaning “water town.” Durango sits at an elevation of about 6,512 feet in the foothills of the La Plata Mountains, surrounded by the San Juan National Forest. Once a mining and smelting center for silver, gold, coal, and other resources, the city later transformed into a cultural and recreational destination known for its rich Western heritage.
The historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, built in 1882, still carries visitors on a scenic route to Silverton. Today, Durango’s economy centers around tourism, outdoor recreation, education, and health services. The city offers year-round adventure with skiing at Purgatory Resort, hiking along the Colorado Trail, and exploring nearby Mesa Verde National Park.
Its historic downtown features preserved 19th-century architecture, local shops, and landmarks such as the Strater Hotel and the Powerhouse Science Center. With a population of over 19,000 residents, a lively college community anchored by Fort Lewis College, and more than 300 sunny days each year, Durango combines small-town charm with access to the vast natural landscapes of Colorado’s Four Corners region.
