Historical Landmark
The Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, preserves the home where Poe, his wife Virginia, and her mother lived from 1842 to 1844.
It is the only surviving residence of Poe in Philadelphia and offers insight into his life during one of his most productive periods, when he published famous works such as "The Black Cat," "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The site, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and established as a National Historic Site in 1980, consists of the three-story brick house along with two adjoining buildings housing a visitor center, exhibits, and a theater.
The home is maintained in a state of arrested decay, unfurnished but evocative of Poe’s dark literary themes, including a cellar reminiscent of scenes from his horror stories. The museum, free to the public, offers guided and self-guided tours and is an important cultural site honoring one of America’s greatest writers and his legacy in American literature and history.
