Theme Park
Enchanted Forest, a family-built theme park near Turner off Interstate 5 south of Salem, Oregon, opened on August 8, 1971, after Roger Tofte spent seven years hand-sculpting storybook scenes like Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet, and Snow White's cottage using cement, rebar, and plaster on 20 wooded acres purchased for $4,000, drawing 75 visitors its first day and 1,000 the next Sunday at $1 adult admission.
Tofte, inspired by a 1964 family road trip, funded construction through watch repairs and a last-minute bank loan despite skepticism from friends calling it "Idiot Hill," later adding family-run attractions like the 1974 Haunted House, 1985 Ice Mountain Bobsled roller coaster, 1996 Big Timber Log Ride, 2006 Challenge of Mondor dark ride with animatronics by son Ken, and musical comedies by daughter Susan.
Still operated by three generations of the Tofte family seasonally from late March through October, the 20-acre park blends nostalgic fairy-tale trails, kiddy rides, bumper cars, water shows, and Old Europe Village for immersive fun drawing over 100,000 visitors yearly amid its handmade charm.
