Fort Bonneville, located near Daniel in Sublette County, Wyoming along Highway 354 northwest of Pinedale on the Green River, was a short-lived fortified winter camp and fur trading post established in August 1832 by U.S. Army Captain Benjamin Bonneville.
Bonneville's expedition of 110 men and 20 wagons crossed South Pass—the first wheeled vehicles over the continental divide—before building the stockade amid fears of Blackfoot attacks, intending it as a base for fur trade financed by John Jacob Astor, though early heavy snows prompted quick abandonment for milder Salmon River areas.
Dubbed "Fort Nonsense" or "Bonneville's Folly" for its harsh location, the site later hosted 1833 and 1836 Green River Rendezvous trading, with 1989 archaeology uncovering walls, a forge, and early 1800s artifacts now at Pinedale's Museum of the Mountain Man; it's a National Historic Place marked by a rock monument.
