Fort Churchill State Historic Park

Fort Churchill State Historic Park, Nevada, United States

State Park

Fort Churchill State Historic Park in Nevada preserves the ruins of Fort Churchill, a U.S. Army fort built in 1860 to protect early settlers, westbound emigrants, and vital communication lines like the Pony Express and telegraph.

The fort played a key role during the Pyramid Lake War, a conflict between settlers and Native Americans, and served as a supply depot during the Civil War. Abandoned in 1869, the fort’s buildings fell into decay until preservation efforts began in the 1930s with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it became a state park in 1957.

Visitors today can explore the preserved adobe ruins, walking trails, and the nearby Buckland Station, a historic ranch house and former Pony Express stop. The park also offers camping, hiking, bird watching, and canoeing along the Carson River, providing both a glimpse into Nevada’s frontier history and natural beauty.
