William S. Foster and his 430 men on the site of Fort Alabama to defend the Hillsborough River bridge and serve as a resupply depot for troops advancing into Seminole territory. Garrisoned intermittently until April 1838, it withstood attacks including a February 1837 Seminole attempt to burn the bridge repelled by U.S. Navy sailors and artillerymen using muskets and cannons, earning praise as one of the strongest field fortifications against Native forces.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site hosts living history events like the annual Fort Foster Rendezvous and Candlelight Dinner with re-enactors demonstrating pioneer and military life amid blockhouses, storehouses, and powder magazine remnants open to visitors alongside park trails.
