Fortress
Fort Gorges is a historic military fort located on Hog Island Ledge in Casco Bay, Maine, near Portland.
Constructed between 1858 and 1865 during the American Civil War, it was designed in a D-shaped style similar to Fort Sumter but built entirely of local granite. The fort was part of a strategic defense system to protect Portland Harbor and its surrounding areas from naval threats, equipped with heavy artillery that could rotate 360 degrees.
Despite its formidable design, technological advances in weaponry like ironclad ships and long-range guns made Fort Gorges obsolete before it was completed. The fort never saw battle or housed troops but was later used as a storage facility during both World Wars. It was declared surplus in 1960 and transferred to the city of Portland.
Today, Fort Gorges is accessible only by boat and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Preservation efforts are ongoing to stabilize its aging granite structure and make it safe for visitors, as the fort stands as a significant cultural and architectural landmark of coastal defense history in the United States.
