Monument
Fort Matanzas National Monument is a small Spanish fort built in 1742 to protect the southern maritime approach to St. Augustine, Florida, guarding the Matanzas Inlet.
The fort was constructed after a 1740 British siege of St. Augustine exposed the vulnerability of the town’s southern entrance, which could be used by enemy ships to attack from behind the main defenses like Castillo de San Marcos. Made of coquina shell stone, the fort is square with walls about 50 feet long and a 30-foot-high tower, serving as a watchtower and defensive structure.
The site holds historical significance dating back to 1565 when Spanish forces killed French Huguenots at this inlet, leading to its name "Matanzas," meaning slaughter in Spanish. Over time, the fort fell into disuse and ruin, but it was restored in the 20th century and designated a U.S. national monument in 1924.
Today, it is accessible by ferry and managed by the National Park Service, surrounded by salt marshes and barrier islands, offering both historical insight and natural beauty to visitors.
