Historical Place
Fort McClary State Historic Site in Kittery Point, Maine, is a historic coastal defense fortification named after Major Andrew McClary, who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War.
The site has been used for military defense since 1689, initially as part of colonial protection efforts and later as a U.S. fort established in 1808 under the second system of coastal defenses. The fort features a distinctive blockhouse built in 1844 with a foundation of mortared fieldstone, granite walls on the first floor, and squared logs above.
Fort McClary was active throughout the 19th century, including during the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I, although it saw no significant battles. Efforts to expand and modernize the fort during the Civil War were halted due to advancing military technology, leaving parts of the planned granite walls incomplete.
The fort was decommissioned in 1918, and the State of Maine acquired the property in 1924. Today, it serves as a historic site with the blockhouse functioning as a museum, offering visitors insight into the evolution of coastal defense and military architecture over several centuries, as well as scenic views of the Piscataqua River.
