Fort Okanogan in Okanogan County, Washington, USA, commemorates a historic fur trading post established in 1811 by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company at the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia Rivers, marking the first American settlement in what became the state.
Originally a modest driftwood outpost that raised the first U.S. flag in the region, it passed to the North West Company in 1813 and Hudson's Bay Company, which relocated it about a mile south around 1830 for better access before closing it in 1860 as the fur trade declined.
The original site now lies underwater due to the Wells Dam reservoir created in 1967, while a former 45-acre state park overlooking both locations offered interpretive displays until its closure; today, the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center provides exhibits on Native American fisheries, Euro-American trade, and regional history.
