Religious Destination
Holy Land USA in Waterbury, Connecticut, is a religious theme park created in the 1950s by John Baptist Greco, a local attorney inspired to depict the life of Christ through biblical scenes.
Built atop Pine Hill, the 18-acre site includes a chapel, stations of the cross, replicas of ancient Israelite villages, catacombs, and numerous nativity scenes made from a mix of modest materials like cinder blocks and plaster. The park opened in 1958 and became a local landmark, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Over time, it fell into disrepair and was closed in 1984 following Greco's declining health and death in 1986.
Various efforts to restore Holy Land USA have taken place, and in 2014 the site was reopened for public visitation while restoration continues. The park remains a spiritual and cultural symbol for the community with its prominent lighted cross visible from the city, offering a place for reflection and prayer.
