The site carries a rich history, having served as a major fishing ground for the Mohegan Tribe, where remnants of ancient stone fishing weirs can still be seen at low water, and later as the site of a 19th-century woolen mill industry. Developed extensively by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park features lasting legacies of their labor, such as pine plantations and forest roads, and it was officially designated as a state park in 1938.
