Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Florida, United States

Park

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park covers 180 acres in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, donated by Chicago attorney Hugh Taylor Birch in 1941 to preserve its coastal wilderness as an urban oasis known as Fort Lauderdale's "Central Park."

The former estate features four ecosystems—maritime hammock, tropical hardwood hammock, mangrove forest, coastal dune lake, and Terramar—with the 1940 Mediterranean-Art Deco Terramar Visitor Center housing exhibits on local history, ecology, and Birch's conservation legacy amid gardens boasting nearly 200 plant species.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset for a $6 vehicle fee, visitors canoe or kayak the mile-long freshwater lagoon, hike or bike short trails spotting over 250 bird species, gopher tortoises, raccoons, and butterflies, picnic under ancient oaks, access Fort Lauderdale Beach via A1A tunnel, fish, inline skate, rent paddleboards or bikes, and enjoy ranger programs.
