Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it remains one of South Carolina's few undeveloped Sea Islands with natural erosion leaving fallen trees on shores, a historic 136-foot lighthouse open for 167-step climbs offering panoramic views, a nature center at the 1,120-foot Paradise Pier for fishing and crabbing, and eight miles of interconnected trails through diverse habitats.
Activities include camping at 102 sites, kayaking a saltwater lagoon, birdwatching ospreys and alligators, and exploring untouched beaches perfect for shelling and solitude.
