Park
Hurd State Park is a scenic 991-acre public recreation area located on the east bank of the Connecticut River in East Hampton, Connecticut.
Established in 1914, it is one of the oldest parks in the state system and is well-known for a landmark geological feature called "split rock," a large formation that towers above the forest and contains veins of feldspar. The park is a popular destination for outdoor activities, offering an extensive network of trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as open spaces perfect for picnicking and recreational games.
It is notably one of only four Connecticut state parks that provides primitive camping specifically for boaters traveling along the Connecticut River. Named for the Hurd family who settled in the region in 1710, the park’s history includes a significant legal victory in 1935, when the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state to prevent potential mining desolation on the property.
