Park
Indian Key Historic State Park is an 11-acre uninhabited island off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, USA, accessible only by boat or kayak and preserving ruins of a 19th-century ghost town that served as Dade County's first county seat in 1836.
Originally settled around 1831 by wrecker Jacob Housman for salvaging shipwrecks from nearby reefs, the prosperous community of 40-70 residents featured stores, a hotel, dwellings, warehouses, wharves, and cisterns until a devastating 1840 attack by Seminole warriors led by Chief Chekika killed 13 people including Dr. Henry Perrine, burned nearly all structures, and ended its heyday.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset for a $2.50 per person fee, visitors hike a 0.6-mile loop trail past stone foundations following the old street grid, swim, snorkel shallow reefs, sunbathe, and explore archaeological remnants amid tropical forest and Native American history dating to A.D. 1000.
