Park
John Martin Reservoir State Park is a Colorado state park of about 13,176 acres in Bent County, on the eastern plains near Las Animas, built around the John Martin Reservoir on the Arkansas River.
The reservoir, formed by the 118‑foot‑tall John Martin Dam, is one of the largest bodies of water in Colorado by capacity and is known for its shallow, wind‑swept lake that supports strong fishing, boating, and water sports when conditions allow. The park officially opened in 2001 under an agreement between Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the dam and the adjoining John Martin Reservoir Wildlife Area that surrounds much of the shoreline.
Visitors can camp, fish, boat, and swim in the state‑park‑managed sections, including areas around Lake Hasty and the north shore, while the larger wildlife area adds hiking, hunting, birdwatching, and exploring historic sites such as petroglyphs and the nearby Santa Fe Trail corridor.
