Park
J.W. Wells State Park, often called Wells State Park, is a roughly 678–700‑acre Michigan state park on the shore of Lake Michigan’s Green Bay, just south of Cedar River and about 30 miles south of Escanaba in the Upper Peninsula.
The park runs along about three miles of sandy shoreline, offering a designated swim beach, picnic areas, a modern campground, and rustic cabins that are open year‑round, making it a popular family‑friendly destination for swimming, fishing, and paddling on the calm bay waters.
Established in 1925 when the children of pioneer lumberman John Walter Wells donated land to the state, much of the park’s buildings, landscaping, and infrastructure were later built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the site remains open all year, supporting activities such as hiking, cross‑country skiing, and ice‑fishing in the winter.
