Park and Garden

Kelly Ingram Park in Birmingham, Alabama, is a 4-acre park located in the city's Civil Rights District, just across from the historic 16th Street Baptist Church. Originally called West Park and renamed in 1932 after local firefighter Osmond Kelly Ingram, the park is famous for its role in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

In May 1963, it was the focal point of large-scale demonstrations led by Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders, where police, under orders from Public Safety Commissioner Bull Connor, violently confronted young protesters with fire hoses, police dogs, and mass arrests.

These dramatic events, captured in widely broadcast images, drew national attention to the struggle for racial equality and helped advance Civil Rights legislation. Today, the park serves as a place of reflection and remembrance, featuring powerful sculptures and monuments that depict the confrontation’s human toll and honor civil rights leaders, emphasizing the park’s continuing role in promoting social justice and reconciliation.
