Park
Lake Manatee State Park covers 556 acres along three miles of the south shore of Lake Manatee, a 2,400-acre reservoir created in the mid-1960s by damming the Manatee River east of Bradenton in Manatee County, Florida, offering serene access to pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, marshes, hardwood forests, and abundant wildlife like alligators, turtles, osprey, deer, and songbirds.
Despite its name, manatees cannot enter due to the dam, but visitors flock for excellent freshwater fishing targeting largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and speckled perch from docks, a boat ramp limited to 20-horsepower motors, or shoreline spots. The park provides full-facility camping at 60 sites, a sandy swimming beach with showers, shaded picnic areas and reservable pavilions under moss-draped oaks.
A playground, 4.2 miles of scenic trails for hiking and birdwatching, canoeing, kayaking, and boating in this peaceful "Real Florida" retreat open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown. Moss-draped oaks, palms, and shoreline vegetation frame the calm lake waters under a partly cloudy sky, capturing the park's tranquil beauty.
