River
The Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, runs about 40 miles from its origins in the Absaroka Range to its confluence with the Yellowstone River near Tower Junction.
It flows through the northeast corner of the park, carving out the fertile and open Lamar Valley, an area famed for its abundant wildlife including bison, elk, grizzly and black bears, wolves, and pronghorn.
The river is joined by tributaries such as Soda Butte Creek and Slough Creek. Known as the "Serengeti of North America," Lamar Valley provides excellent habitats for diverse species and offers visitors outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities year-round.
The valley and river were also significant in wolf reintroduction efforts in the mid-1990s. The surrounding landscape features meadows, portland rock canyons, and forests, all touched by the history of the 1988 Yellowstone fires, creating a remarkably scenic and ecologically important area.
