Lathrop State Park is Colorado’s first state park, a 1,450–1,600‑acre area located just west of Walsenburg in Huerfano County, nestled in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks near the Sangre de Cristo Range.
The park centers on two reservoirs, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, fed by the Cucharas River and offering boating, fishing, swimming, and waterskiing on Martin and quieter, wake‑free pursuits like kayaking and canoeing on Horseshoe. It features a mix of high‑plains grassland, piñon‑juniper woodland, and a distinctive volcanic ridge called Walsen Ridge, with more than 80 campsites, picnicking areas.
Hiking and horse trails, and a 9‑hole golf course operated by the City of Walsenburg that is the only golf course within any Colorado state park. Named after Harold W. Lathrop, the state’s first parks director, Lathrop opened in 1962 and has since served as a busy, family‑oriented recreation hub with strong views of the rugged Spanish Peaks.
