Archaeological Site
Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site, located 29 miles northwest of Thermopolis in Hot Springs County, Wyoming, features a 400-meter-long near-vertical sandstone cliff etched with over 92 prehistoric panels containing more than 300 petroglyphs in the distinctive Dinwoody style, dating back up to 10,000 years and depicting supernatural figures, animals, and abstract symbols sacred to Native American vision quests.
Acquired by Wyoming in 1973 due to local preservation efforts and listed on the National Register of Historic Places that year, this fragile world-renowned site likely served as a ritual location rather than a settlement, with most images linked to ancestors of the Eastern Shoshone tribe.
Visitors access a self-guided interpretive trail, picnic shelter, restrooms, and summer-staffed visitor center via permit and key from nearby towns, emphasizing its remote Bighorn Basin setting along Cottonwood Creek.
