Acquired by Wyoming in 1973 due to local preservation efforts and listed on the National Register of Historic Places that year, this fragile world-renowned site likely served as a ritual location rather than a settlement, with most images linked to ancestors of the Eastern Shoshone tribe.
Visitors access a self-guided interpretive trail, picnic shelter, restrooms, and summer-staffed visitor center via permit and key from nearby towns, emphasizing its remote Bighorn Basin setting along Cottonwood Creek.
