Park
Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park covers 188 acres six miles west of Monticello in Jefferson County, Florida, preserving the state's tallest prehistoric Native American ceremonial earthwork mound at 46 to 51 feet high and 300 feet wide at its base, constructed by hand over centuries between 1,100 and 1,800 years ago by members of the Weeden Island or Swift Creek cultures using millions of basketfuls of soil, shells, and clay.
This significant mound complex, one of only three major surviving examples in the Florida Panhandle with at least seven mounds, two plazas, side platforms, and ramps evoking Mesoamerican styles, shows evidence of nearly 12,000 years of human habitation from Paleo-Indian times through hierarchical societies that used it for religious, political, and social purposes.
Visitors explore an interpretive trail past smaller mounds, enjoy picnicking at a pavilion with bronze sculpture and exhibits, birdwatching, and hiking amid peaceful woodlands, open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown at 4500 Sunray Road South.
