Historical Place
The Lexington Battle Green in Massachusetts is a historic town common where the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired on April 19, 1775.
This site witnessed an early skirmish between 77 local militiamen, known as Minutemen, and British troops who were ordered to seize colonial military supplies. Eight militia members were killed and ten wounded in this brief but significant confrontation that marked the start of the colonies' fight for independence.
The green, originally purchased by townspeople in the early 1700s as a militia training ground, is now a National Historic Landmark and serves as a memorial park. It is one of the few places in the United States where the national flag is authorized to fly 24 hours a day, symbolizing its importance in American history and heritage.
